Serving Those Who Serve: Hero of the Month

FOX31 Denver KDVR-TV awards Skip Miller of Train to Transition Sept 2018 Hero of the Month

https://kdvr.com/2018/09/17/serving-those-who-serve-hero-of-the-month/

Homeless, jobless…and often, plagued with depression.

It’s no secret that it takes serious resilience when transitioning from military life.

One veteran saw this need firsthand…and did something about it. That’s why he’s our Serving Those Who Serve September Hero of the Month.

What happens inside “Front Range Cross Fit” is not your ordinary Wednesday workout. In fact, the cross fitters come inside, so they can better deal with the *outside world.

“Like for most of our people, what happens inside here isn’t necessarily the reason why they are here,” says owner of Front Range Cross Fit, Skip Miller.

These cross-fitters in training have one thing in common: each of them has served their country. Front Range Cross Fit was one of the very first cross fit gyms to open in the world back in 2006. The first veteran walked in these doors back in 2010.

“He came up to me, still a member here, and said, ‘Skip, I don’t think you understand what an impact just being here in this environment meant to me in my transition from the military to my civilian life.’ And it was one of the nicest things anyone’s ever said to me,” Miller said.

Miller went home, told his wife, Jodi and that was the start of ‘Train to Transition’ or ‘T3’.

“What TJ had told me was that having that one hour where he knew exactly where he had to be every day,…and he knew he was going to be held accountable in that hour. That felt like the military to him still, right?” Miller said

Civilian life, miller says, is a stark contrast.

“It’s like, I have the freedom to do everything…anything..but they do nothing,” Miller said

So that one hour serves as the first building block in regaining that familiar friend, discipline.

“It’s the loss of identity and the loss of purpose that causes some of the angst that veterans can feel when they leave the military,” Miller said.

Behind the reps and the sweat, they get some of that back.

“We call it group suffering…There’s very few things that get more real than a group suffering together,” Miller said.

Some veterans come for bootcamp, a couple hours a week. Others, choose to be a part of the “indoctrination” program, attending regularly for three weeks, alongside other vets, before assimilating into front range’s other classes.

“Because it’s not just okay if they are just comfortable around vets. That’s not realistic in this world….We’ve had veterans that were not able to hold jobs down, and now, they have jobs. They are working in the community,” Miller said.

Skip Miller knows this delicate transition from military well: he served from 1989 to 1993 in the 10th Mountain Division .

He served in Panama twice right after the US invasion and in Egypt, on a mission monitoring Egyptian-Israeli peace. Understanding the sacrifice, he never charges the vets – not even a dollar- to attend a class.

“We raise money as we can and we support them whether the money is there or not,” Miller said.

The Fox31 Problem Solvers thought that was pretty noble, and awarded Miller the Serving Those Who Serve September Hero of the Month award.

Miller’s longterm goal is to get other cross fit coaches from across the country on board with the “Train to Transition” program.

About Fox 31: Serving Thise who Serve

“FOX31: Serving Those Who Serve” is an initiative that builds on the stories FOX31 Denver KDVR has been telling for years by shining a spotlight on our military and their families. Through the comprehensive initiative, veterans, active service members, their families, and volunteers who serve our military will share their stories with the community, as well as connect with resources and organizations that serve our military men and women.

More: Visit the “Serving Those Who Serve” page on KDVR.com

In addition, as part of “Serving Those Who Serve,” FOX31 Denver will be honoring a hero who exemplifies what it means to serve our country. Of course, heroes come in many shapes and sizes: active military, veterans, military families, volunteers who make a difference in the lives of those who serve – even pooches who give their lives in the service of our military men and women. We will be telling their stories, honoring the work they do and giving back a little to those who give so much. If you know of a hero who exemplifies extraordinary courage and commitment, we’d love to hear from you! Click here to fill out a nomination form.

“Colorado has a rich military history and presence as well as a sizable veteran population. For us to be able to showcase these brave men and women and their families, as well as offer guidance to resources, is an exciting step forward for FOX31 and our community,” said Joan Barrett, Vice President and General Manager of KDVR-TV/KWGN-TV.

2018 T3 Memorial Day Fundraiser

Workout Announcement:

“As a CrossFit Affiliate owner I have always felt like it was a great honor and great responsibility to execute a Hero workout at the gym. To do it well. To honor the fallen. It is a job that I have always taken very seriously.”
-Skip Miller
Front Range CrossFit

The story behind the workout named “Wyatt”. (Link here).

Wyatt
30 minutes of:
30 double-unders
10 deadlifts
3 clean and jerks
1 snatch attempt

Your score is the total amount of weight snatched in the 30 minute work period.

You can pick any weight to put on the barbell. All barbell movements are done with the same weight. However, you only get one attempt at the snatch per round. So if you miss the snatch, you must do all of the other work before attempting another snatch. If you can’t do double-unders, you may substitute 50 jump rope singles or run a 150 meter run instead.

FRCF Schedule
10:30 AM Warm-up Starts
11:00 AM Jimmy Graham speaks about Wyatt
11:15 AM National Anthem
11:20 AM Workout begins

Anyone and everyone is welcome to do the workout at FRCF. Or, if you just want to come to the gym to hear Jimmy speak at 11AM, that is great too. We will have stations set up so that you can donate to T3 at the event.

2018 T3 Memorial Day Fundraiser

Train to Transition (T3) Veterans Project
Memorial Day Fundraiser

Our non-profit 501(c)3 helps veterans transition to civilian life through physical training and community.
We raise money to pay for combat veteran’s membership to T3 affiliated CrossFit gyms.

Train to Transition needs your help.

T3 is hosting a fundraising workout on Memorial Day.  We did the first one last year, and it was incredibly effective, raising over $11,000 across the 6 different locations.  Any hosting CrossFit Affiliate can choose to do any CrossFit Hero workout that they wish. We set up each Affiliate with their own fundraising page and all proceeds go directly to funding veterans in the program.Last year, FRCF did the CF Hero workout called, The Seven.  It is a workout named in honor of the seven CIA agents that died in a suicide car bombing on Camp Chapman in Khost, Afghanistan on December 30th, 2009.  There were 6 others wounded in that attack.  One of those wounded that day was a man with the call sign, “Wyatt”.  After being wounded in the attack, Wyatt crawled around in the dust and the mud and the blood and saved a bunch of lives putting on tourniquets and rendering first aid to the survivors until help arrived.

Wyatt was a veteran Navy SARC (Special Amphibious Reconnaissance Corpsman) and an experienced GRS Protective Agent (Global Response Staff) who served our country in various capacity for almost 20 years.  I am lucky enough to know someone that served with Wyatt, Jimmy Graham. Last year, when we decided to do The Seven, Jimmy called up Wyatt and asked if he had anything that we could have at the gym for the event that would be a visual representation of the attack at Khost. Two hours later, Wyatt had the flag that flew over Camp Chapman on the day of the attack and one of the granite stars that had been carved out of the memorial for the casualties from that attack, in the mail. It was an incredibly touching and generous gesture on Wyatt’s part.

Since last year’s Memorial Day event, Wyatt unfortunately passed away during a training event. He was still actively involved in the defense of our country in 2017, almost 8 years after getting blown up on that porch in Khost. So, we have named a workout in his honor and are using that workout for our Memorial Day fundraiser this year.

Like last year, Jimmy Graham (veteran Navy SEAL and former GRS Protective Agent) will be at the event at FRCF to speak about Wyatt.

We have been working on it for over a year now and we are finally kicking off our first fundraiser with a T3 Memorial Day Event. We could not be more excited.

The process is fast, easy, and secure.

Who is T3?

“It is our mission to help Veterans transition to civilian life through education, physical training and community.”

T3 is a therapeutic and rehabilitative program for Veterans that supports personal growth and empowers the individual to face physical and emotional challenges as they separate from active duty. We do this by building a community of support with other Veterans and by fostering meaningful connections with civilians. This community is focused around a structured fitness program that challenges Veterans to improve their mental and physical strength by transitioning a military mindset to an athletic mindset.

Where does my money go?

* All funds go to education, physical training, and community programs for transitioning Veterans.
* Train to Transition is a 501c(3) registered non-profit organization. FEIN Tax Id for Donations is 81-5403868.

T3 Veteran programs rely on the generosity of our donors. We sincerely appreciate and are thankful for your support.
